Today, vinyl siding is the most commonly used siding product in the United States.

Insolated Siding

Due to its low maintenance requirements. Vinyl siding comes in a vast variety of profiles, textures and colors; it also comes in a wide assortment of quality. Most manufactures make siding in several different grades from thin builder grade sidings to thick ridged high-end siding with lifetime warranties.

Vinyl siding is a cost effective siding option for many Dutchlap Sidinghomes. There aremany styles and grade options available from vinyl siding contractors for homeowners to select from. Made from polyvinyl chloride, or PVC, vinyl siding was introduced to the market in the late 1950s as a replacement for steel & aluminum siding, by an independently-owned manufacture called Crane Plastics in Columbus, Ohio. Originally viewed as a cheap siding alternative in its early days. The original mono-extrusion process made it difficult to produce a consistent, quality product. Known to warp, crack and fade easily in extreme climates with prolonged exposure to the elements.

EPS Backed Siding
By the 1970s, a transformation of vinyl siding had began, with engineered formulation changes. These changes affected the product's production speed, impact resistance, and range of colors. In the following decades vinyl siding grew steadily in popularity due to increase durability, versatility, and ease of maintenance. Due to technology advancements in the last decade there has been amazing strides in vinyl siding engineering.

Today's vinyl siding is manufactured using a coextrusion process. Two layers of PVC are extruded simultaneously, the top layer or cap stock commonly comprises about a third of the siding thickness provides the weather barrier. Made with approximately 10% titanium dioxide, which is a white pigment used in sunscreen and provides resistance to breakdown from UV light.

Vinyl siding like paint, will inevitably fade over time, but the fade rate is considerably slower with vinyl siding than paint or others, the intensity of the color has a direct correlation to the rate of fade. For example, UV light from the sun, will fade barn red faster than the lighter clay colors whether paint, vinyl siding or other composition.

The lower layer, or substrate, is typically about 15% ground limestone (calcium carbonate). The limestone helps reduce cost, and also counter balances the titanium dioxide, keeping both streams fluid during coextrusion manufacturing. A small quantity of tin mercaptan or butadiene is added as a stabilizer to chemically tie up any hydrochloric acid that is released into the PVC material as the siding ages.

Today, vinyl siding is the most commonly used siding product in the United States.
